HOYLANDSWAINE C.C. 2nd TEAM v GOLCAR(Paddock Shield S/F) on Sun 08 Jul 2012 at 1.30pm
HOYLANDSWAINE C.C. Won BY 1 RUN

Match report The day started with further trauma for the groundsmen, not enough they are having to cope with the wettest summer on record, the white liner proceeded to give up the ghost. The only sure thing this summer - other than the rain - is that Swaine don't win the toss. Having chosen to play on the rolled mud wicket as opposed to the bright green or stubbly brown one, Greenwood duly obliged and Swaine were inserted by visiting skipper Brook. Swaine were missing notable absentees (the holidaying Wilson and Hinchy) , Copley was needed for next weeks Sykes cup semi, and Holmes was AWARE (absent without a reasonable excuse). The batting order was shuffled as the 5 players 17 and under were interspersed with old heads Lee, Hoyle and Potter. Hoyle came and went to a juggling effort at midwicket, bringing together the irrepressible Marsh and Lee who set about the Golcar attack. They bludgeoned their way to 37 and 47 respectively. Marsh being desperatley unlucky to hit a tracer bullet to the dozing Ali who had to catch it or wear it - not suprisingly he chose the former for a superb catch. Even then, with Lockwood and Potter together Swaine looked capable of setting a decent target. Visiting skipper Brook had different ideas as he ripped through the middle and tail with worrying ease. 132/3 bizarrely became 138 all out (four of those being leg byes). Golcar were undoubtably bouyant at the interval, but Greenwood re-grouped his troops and asked that they leave nothing to regrets on the second half. Opening bowlers Lockwood and Bird both made early breakthroughs and had an edge been pouched by the keeper Golcar would have been 5 for 3 . As it was Mr Angry Bird let the frustration get to him as he proceeded to berate his teammates, the opposition, and briefly the umpires. Lockwood cleaned up the dangerous Iqbal and Greenwood replaced the seething Bird to good effect as he bowled Wilson to leave Golcar 60-4 Slow left armer Potter then got in the action with a quick brace 76-6..Swaines game surely? Chapman, Gill and Noblet had other ideas as runs and wickets came at nailbiting intervals. A final throw of the dice brought back opening pair - Bird channelled his agression to take a phenomenal caught and bowled, and at 121-8 the game appeared to have swung back Swaines way. Ten more runs added before man of the match Potter took a sweet second slip catch as Bird again found the edge. Eight to win, last two at the crease. The patio noise reached fever pitch, then Bird forgot to use the pitch, and slung down 4 byes (contencious umpiring decision not to award a no-ball left Golcar still one short). Lockwood was out of overs so skipper Greenwood turned to Potter> First ball of the new over took the outside edge of Chapmans bat, Marsh pouched the catch and the ground erupted. Great credit to Golcar, Brook and Chapman in particular who must still be wondering how they finsihed on the losing side, for playing their part in one of Haigh Lanes greatest ever games.
